Antique or bric a brac shops can be found down alleyways, Oriel Hafan Gallery sells prints of Porthmadog in days gone by and you can find books of local interest from Browsers or Bargain Books. Shops here sell Welsh books and music by Welsh musicians, particularly Siop Eifionydd, and there are several fashionable ladies and gents clothing retailers, rarely seen in small towns today. If you are thinking of adopting an abandoned or mistreated dog, visit PAWS or Freshfields Animal Rescue Centre in the High Street.
Porthmadog also boasts two butchers that sell local Welsh meats and three traditional grocers-Pritchards, Joe Lewis and Maelfa. There are bakeries selling the famous local Welsh fruit bread ‘Bara Brith’, Cadwaladar’s that make their own ice creams and four delicatessen shops. For general groceries, the town has four supermarkets-Aldi Stores on the Penamser Road- a light and airy modern new building with many different and fine foodstuffs from around the world- Lidl, Tesco and a mini Spar.
There is plenty of choice with easy parking in either the short or long term public car parks at either end of the High Street. (See map on the next page for details) These are just a few of the wonders that Porthmadog has to offer. It is hardly surprising that it is such a popular town in which to shop with local customers and those who travel many miles just for a day here. There is no other town like it in Snowdonia or The Llyˆn Peninsula.
