Eating & Drinking In Porthmadog
For a small town, Porthmadog has an unusually large number of eating and take out establishments to suit all tastes and pockets. At the last count, there were forty-one in total of varying descriptions to be found in Porthmadog, Tremadog and Borth y Gest.
The range includes Porthmadog’s only AA Rosette restaurant-The Royal Sportsman Hotel- which serves Modern European meals with a Mediterranean influence- in its beautifully restored dining room. The Hotel also boasts a gastro pub in which dogs are allowed. It also has a wonderful healthy options children menu and serves great coffee.
Porthmadog has several bistro style restaurants-the Grapevine, Yr Hen Fecws (the Old Bakery), the Square and Golden Fleece, both found in Tremadog. Traditional ‘pub grub’ can be found in the Pen Cei by the harbour and popular ethnic food includes two Indian and one Chinese restaurants. There are a number of take-outs in both Porthmadog and Tremadog which you will find in many small towns.- four fish & chip shops, a pizza and one Indian and Chinese to name but a few. For those who just want a sandwich or baguette to eat in or take out, why not try Jessies in the High street by Barclays Bank. And on those warm sunny days, enjoy some of Wales’s finest mouth- watering ice creams made locally by Cadwalader’s whose shop is located in the High Street.
Despite the decline in the number of pubs nationally, there are eleven in Porthmadog serving a range of different beers. Spooners, on the Ffestiniog railway station is well known for its range of real ales, very popular with train enthusiasts; the Pen Cei overlooking the harbour, the Royal Sportsman well known for its lagers and, particularly, wines from all over the world by the glass or bottle. However, one of the most popular beers is from the town’s own micro brewery-Purple Moose.
