THE RAILWAYS

Ffestiniog Railway

The Ffestinog Railway is known the world over. Originally built to bring the slate from Blaenau Ffestiniog to the harbour at Porthmadog, today, the little steam engines pull carriages of sightseers through the picturesque Vale of Ffestiniog.

You can break your journey along the way, with Tan y Bwlch, situated in the heart of the National Park woodland, being a popular choice. The station café (check opening times before you travel) offers tasty snacks and there are numerous woodland walks in the area. At Blaenau Ffestiniog, the slate mines surround the town, reminding you of the rich industrial heritage of the area. Guided walks are often available and a trip to the slate caverns is fascinating.

The Welsh Highland Railway is the Ffestiniog’s latest project. Trains will soon be running all the way from beside Caernarfon’s famous castle, through Beddgelert and the stunning scenery of the Aberglaslyn Pass and into Porthmadog to join the Ffestiniog at Harbour Station. This 25 mile line will be one of the great railway journeys of Britain.

Trains run all the year round with a regular service between Easter and the end of October. Most trains are steam hauled. Make the most of your day with a full line rover ticket; leave your car behind and sit back and enjoy the view.
