The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway in Porthmadog
Ideal for families with young children
The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, a Member-Owned Charitable Trust, offers a unique experience. Lots of railways offer you long rides: these are often very expensive, and younger children soon get bored. But the WHHR is not only extremely good value for money, we can also pretty well guarantee you won’t have time to be bored!
The short demonstration branch line journey, in its large, comfortable coaches, is hauled either by traditional-looking coal-fired steam locos like “Gelert” – or at quieter times by our celebrity Hunslet diesel, which worked on the site of the 2012 London Olympics.
The train takes you to Pen-y-Mount Junction – an exact replica of an original small WHR halt – and then it returns you to our Works at Gelert’s Farm.
Here the Guard becomes your tour guide, and takes you around our museum, “The Engine Sheds”, where you can climb on locomotives and see how they work, and enjoy rides on the scenic miniature railway.
Back at Porthmadog (WHR) Station, there’s a magnificent selection of railway books and souvenirs in our shop, and our period Russell Tea Room provides meals, Cream Teas and speciality cakes. The car park here is free, with a large, inexpensive long-stay car park close by.
Each early May Bank Holiday we run our well-known Spring Gala, and during the year there are events especially for children – Easter Bunnies on Easter Sunday, Teddy Bears and Dragons in the Spring, and a ghostly Hallowe’en party in October.
Ask about our afternoon and full day Steam Locomotive Driver Experiences: ideal birthday presents for the discerning enthusiast.Find us opposite Porthmadog’s main line station. For further details, telephone 01766 513402 or go on line to: www.whr.co.uk
